How Ad-blocker Detecting Software protect US$22 billion Advertising Industry

Ad-blockers, the enemy of free content or data plans, depending on which side of the fence you’re sitting, will not be going away anytime soon.

This problem is pretty serious, costing advertisers and content providers some US$22 billion in lost income in 2014, double the losses in 2013.  Good to note that in 2014, online advertising was worth US$50 billion with its value increasing by 15% annually.

Now the coding arms race between the developers for the Ad -blockers and the content and online service providers is accelerating as I’d predicted in Why Google needs new Ad Formats as Telcos will block YouTube Ads.  And it all seems to have begun with Yahoo Mail!

Yahoo Mail – Ad-blocker detecting software  a First Strike weapon against Ad-blockers

An interesting phenomenon is on the horizon thanks to Yahoo Mail; ad-blocker detecting software deployed by websites on online web services. Once they detect ad-blockers, they deny the viewer of the website access to their free content and services. Yahoo Mail, who seems to have started this trend since November 2015, has been using this ad-blocker detecting software to make it difficult go users who have deployed ad-blocking Apps on their smartphone to log into their email.

Many users now have no choice but to remove their ad-blockers from their smartphones and desktop browsers if they want to continue accessing these free content and online service providers websites. After all, it’s advertising that pay for the free content as noted in Why the Rise of ad-Blockers is killing free Publisher and App Content.

But has this trend of using ad-blocker detecting software been on the rise?

Researchers say ad-blocker detecting software on the rise – PageFair leading the charge

Dr. Muhammad Haris Mughees at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology decided to see to what extent ad-blocker detecting software was being deployed by online web services.

His team of fellow researchers designed a machine-learning algorithm that scanned the Alexa top 100,000 websites for ad-blocker detecting software. Surprisingly, the results indicated that the arms race had indeed begun, with some 300 websites having deployed ad-blocker detecting software.

Albeit many of these ad-blocker detecting software were easy to bypass, the more sophisticated ones such as third-party ad-block detectors such as PageFair can even manage to bypass ad-blockers and deliver ads nonetheless, to wrote the researchers: “PageFair uses dynamic JavaScript and code obfuscation. For example, it involves assembling URLs on the fly to retrieve additional JavaScript codes”.

Alternatives to ad-blocker detecting software – Sponsored Articles and Micropayments

As the battle heats up between ad-blocker and ad-blocker detecting software developers, other are seeking ways to meet customers and content providers halfway.

Apple has allowed publishers to publish Sponsored Articles with ads alongside editorial stories in the Apple News app as noted in How Apple News’ Sponsored Articles helps Publishers as Ads Blockade continues.

Dutch Start-up named Blendle since March 2016 has been re-introducing the idea of micropayments, hoping readers would be willing to pay for quality content as noted in How Blendle revolutionizes Newspapers and Magazines as Ad Blockers Rise.

This might be the long-term solution, as Blendle co-founder Alexander Klöpping says the refund rate in Europe is 10%, mostly likely maintained thanks to excellent micromanagement of what type of news s being delivered by Blendle.

This model brings into consideration journalistic independence, as journalists, bloggers and publishers will seek to write content that is pleasing to the reader, resulting in self censorship in order to make money.

Microsoft and Google Ad-blocker Whitelists – Making consumers benefit from the US$22 billion per annum advertising Industry

Ultimately, a Google and Microsoft may have the ultimate solution; paying ad-blockers to whitelist ads and allow them to be displayed, as Ads, especially on YouTube, are Google’s Achilles heel as noted in Why Google needs new Ad Formats as Telcos will block YouTube Ads.

This practice of whitelisting is, however, may soon be under scrutiny. The NAA (Newspaper Association of America), has they’ve the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to see if any laws have been broken by the developers of these ad-blockers. After all, if developers for ad-blocker accepts compensation to have you ads displayed, it could be seen as a disruptive trade practice akin to pirates robbing Spanish galleons as a Tax for free passage to lucrative Trade routes.

Personally, for me as a blogger, an even better idea would be for the advertisers to share some of that US$22 billion per annum advertising Industry revenue with the intended viewers of the ads themselves, as a form of compensation for exceeding their data plans.

Already Telcos such as Digicel have begun blocking ads since October 2015 as noted in Why Digicel blocking Google ads may be the rise of Digicel App World. Digicel may also have ambition of making money from advertising, particularly from ads in Apps built by local Caribbean developers.

Such a radical solution is also a compromise, but would make the users of free content and online services feel less inclined to install ad-blockers in the first place, if they too had a stake in the success of the advertisers.

There are many books on how to become a success, but only a few on how to be a persistent success. Even fewer cover how to be a persistent success over your lifetime.

Die Empty is that kind of book. A new edition of Henry’s book,  asks readers to realistically confront the value they offer to the world through their work, whether they are managing a corporation, delivering interoffice memos, or crafting the next artistic masterpiece. Small Business Trends reviewed an earlier edition of the book some time ago.

What The Book Die Empty Is About

Die Empty deals with the core psychology of workplace engagement, an increasing topic of concern in the “work as work” vs “work as happiness” debate. Die Empty’s contribution to this conversation is to redirect the conversation to the individual. Specifically, the question shouldn’t be “What kind of work can I do that will fulfill me?”. Instead, the question should be “What kind of person am I offering to my work?”

Todd Henry explores the answer in the book.

He begins by pointing out that we often begin any endeavor (new job, a new position or the next project, etc.) with energy, enthusiasm, and motivation. As we become more invested in the work, we fall prey to mediocrity. The book, however, uses “mediocrity” in a way different than the common use of the term. In Die Empty, “mediocrity” isn’t just “average”; it’s a compromise. We’re no longer feeding our energy and passion into the project, rather we are accepting a lower standard to match our lowered expectations.

To get to the level of persistent creative output that “Die Empty” wants us to achieve, we have to do a couple of things:

  1. First, we need to recognize our passion (your “Big Why”) and what we’re willing to do to pursue it.
  2. Second, we need to feed our passion with healthy and energizing practices (engaging in the skill set used in the book)
  3. Third, we need to starve opportunities that drain our passion and motivation (The “7 Deadly Sins of Mediocrity” and other concepts mentioned in the book).

If we can achieve the above three things and make it a part of our daily habits, a person can build a habit of success, not just the products of success.

Todd Henry is a writer, speaker, and founder of The Accidental Creative, an organization that helps businesses foster and cultivate creativity through innovative workshops. He also hosts the “Accidental Creative” podcast.

What Was Best About This Book

The best part of Die Empty is the optimistic tone (despite what might be assumed by the title) that Todd Henry brings to the topic of self-help. His language is conversational and easy to digest but is hard-hitting and innovative. As discussed above, Todd Henry has a different perspective on the common terms we use in “work-life balance” like “passion” and “mediocrity” that deserve attention.

What Could Have Been Done Differently

Die Empty is a great book for getting the inspiration a person needs to move forward. It covers the language of the “self-help” in a way that is refreshing and new. The book does not provide a step-by-step guide to HOW to use that self-help on a daily basis.For example, the book helps readers understand that chasing a “good job” to fulfill a dream without understanding our motivation will lead to a wild goose chase, but it doesn’t tell you how to get started. It also focuses almost exclusively on an individual level, not organization-level change.

Why Read This Book

Die Empty is the kind of book that you want to read when you feel a nagging or sinking feeling that you (or your team) could and should be doing more. The book walks you through the common obstacles that everyone faces but does so in an engaging and unique way. Todd Henry asks pointed questions that really make you stop and think. It is in those thinking moments when your mind shifts from mediocrity to greatness.

As much as I love Nintendo, I have to admit facts; The PlayStation 4 is the most popular game console in the world since it launched in November 2013.

According to stats published by Sony, makers of the Playstation 4, they’re in pole position when compared to the other major game console makers, Microsoft and Xbox One in the past twenty five (25) months:

  • 40 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold
  • 21 million Xbox One consoles sold
  • 13 million Wii U consoles sold

To put that number in perspective:

  • 4 million PlayStation 4 consoles between early January 2016 and May 22nd, 2016
  • 1 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold every month

This makes the Sony Playstation 4 the fastest selling gaming console of all time. They may even be in contention for the title of fastest-selling PlayStation game console of all time.

So how far ahead is Sony compared to the competition?

They’re so far ahead, their competition has been second-guessing themselves of late.

Still, one wonders; what will the competitions do when highly-anticipated games like The Last Guardian and Final Fantasy XV land on the PlayStation 4 later in September 2016 as prophesied in How Final Fantasy XV on PlayStation 4 means PlayStation VR in September 2016 make an appearance alongside their VR Console at E3 slated to be held between June 14-16, 2016?

Worse, if they launch the US$399 Playstation VR in September 2016 as predicted in How US$399 Playstation VR coming in October started a VR Console War, it will be as if Sony had dropped a Thermonuclear bomb on Microsoft and Nintendo.

Folks, the Console Wars just got interesting in 2016, as VR loom large in September 2016….

GoSpaces, a free website builder and ecommerce platform, this week announced on its blog that it is expanding into 38 countries and 20 languages, making it accessible to more than one-third of the world’s population (2.7 billion people) in their native tongue.

The platform will be tailored to each country’s needs regarding use of language and will include local payment gateways, full translations on the backend and, soon to come, auto-currency settings that will help international customers see how much products cost in their local currency.

Supported languages include Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, German, Korean, French, Turkish, Italian, Thai, Polish, Dutch, Czech, Swedish, Bulgarian, Danish, Finnish and Norwegian, the blog post says.

GoSpaces touts the expansion as advantageous based on the fact that most ecommerce platforms are only available in English, even though English speakers make up just five percent of the world’s population.

Kasper Christensen, GoSpace’s co-founder, says the platform’s flexibility in language and payment options opens it up to audiences across the globe. He expressed his excitement in this quote:

“Already we’ve seen creative uses that we never imagined, like tour guides advertising their services, restaurants posting their menus and bands using it to sell concert tickets,” Christensen said. “Now that we’re in 38 countries I imagine we’ll see even more variety in the Spaces being created by our community.”

Something else that sets the GoSpaces’ platform apart from other ecommerce competitors is that it is entirely free to use — to launch a website or online store — making it useful for testing business ideas or bringing new products to market. Once a merchant earns more than $50 per month, the company charges a subscription fee of $9 a month plus 3 percent per transaction.

According to the GoSpaces website, it only takes a few clicks to set up a site, and users can sell physical, digital or subscription goods. Currently, more than 50,000 sites have been created using the platform, consisting of artists, authors, entrepreneurs and others.

The GoSpaces platform was developed by ecommerce company Shopify as part of “Shopify Garage,” the name the company gives to experimental projects.
